Museum of Local History in Schruns
The museum of local history was founded in 1906 and is located in an over 500 year old Rhaeto-Romanic house on the church square, which was once the seat of the "mountain magistrate". On exhibit here are items of cultural value from the entire valley which give visitors a fascinating insight into the Montafon way of life over the centuries.
Natural History Museum Schruns
Montafon Mining Museum Silbertal
For centuries mining in Silbertal was of great economical significance to the valley. The mines have long since been shut down but documents, drawings and numerous exhibits at the Mining Museum provide a fascinating reminder of long-past mining days. Find out about iron, copper and silver mining, the strenuous and often dangerous life of the miners, the different mining trades, the role played by the "mountain magistrate", transportation and processing. In addition many geological samples from the region are on show.
One of the most important economic sectors in the valley today is hydraulic power. In a separate section of the museum you can find out more about the making of "white gold" or electricity from hydro power in the Vorarlberg Illwerke's exhibition. Mining and tunnelling techniques that were used in the building of the reservoirs are explained in detail.
